Can't answer the rest of your questions but FMA automatically sets the preset stations to the six strongest stations in the local area. So, when you drive out of your area, select FMA and you will get the best stations in your area, not necessarily anything you want to listen to.

Funny thing, though, is that I've set the presets already on FMA. Then I can scroll through FMI, FMII, and then FMA and my presets are still set.

How do I activate this "FMA" feature? Do I have to set to FMA and then hit "scan" or something?
