Simple question on oil changes (archive)

my 98 1.9 seems to be taking its sweet time clicking off maintenance interval LEDs. I got it in Feb 01 with 19.7K from the dealer CPO'd. Now Im at 27K and still have 3 leds to go.

Ive always changed synthetic oil around 5-8K miles, is it really ok for my 1.9 to tack on sooooooo many miles before an oil change?

Im contemplating getting a topsider and just changing the oil and filter myself in-between scheduled maintenances and oil services. Is this going over board and will the computer somehow "know" there is fresh oil or is this good preventative maintenance?

Please let me know what you all do?

Thanks

Curtis
