I'm struggling to remember, but I think that clay has a mineral grain size that is microscopic. So it would be a super fine abrasive. Kind of like the ultimate in wet sanding.

At least that's how I see it. The stickiness has to play a roll too, but I don't think it's the primary mechanism, or else the clay would stick to the car ... that or you could get the same results with a lint roller.

Just thinking out loud ... but I feel good about the abrasive thing.
