When I bought my 2.8 in June the service department said they had changed the oil and put in 10-40 non-synthetic. I told them I planned to use synthetic oil and they said I should use 5-40. I've never used 5-xx oil before in any car or motorcycle. Is this the right oil to use?

A BMW dealer following the service guidelines for your car would use BMW 5W-30 High Performance Synthetic oil in your 2.8.
