DISCLAIMER: these are just my opinion...

The Integra Type R:

+ fast
+ lightweight
+ rare
+ handbuilt engine? I think the first R's were
+ cool red stitching here and there
+ cheap compared to an M
+ probably cheaper to insure than an M
+ way cooler than most Japanese cars out there
+ Honda reliabilty & build quality
- Looks a lot like every other Integra on the road (unless you notice the 5-lug bolt wheels, lots of kids add "type R" badges to other Hondas & Acuras)
- No A/C unless you pay to add it
- Not much sound insulation
- No luxury features whatsoever: cruise, heated seats, etc.
- No choice in paint... you have to get white
- White painted wheels remind me of mid-80s Camaro color-keyed wheels
- Lots of Rice Boys have these (if image matters to you)

The M Coupe:

+ The fastest US production BMW today
+ The stiffest US production BMW today
+ Extremely rare... and they won't be around forever
+ Extremely unusual... will not be mistaken for anything else on the road
+ Extreme personality
+ Lots of luxury touches
+ More solid feeling interior
+ More color choices
- More expensive
- No spare (do any of us even care?)
- More expensive to insure
- Slight possibility of problems such as rattles or leaky rear wiper

There are probably a million other things to consider. I did my best to be impartial, but in the end I say if you can afford an M Coupe, do it. I think the M is a car of a lifetime. If money is a stretch (big payments tend to suck the pleasure out of a car) then go with the R and be happy. Maybe in a few years you can swing an M Compact or even a new 6-series.
