: : $39977 (it may be lower now) at Crown BMW - Greensboro NC. Brand new - on the showroom floor since Dec 1998.

: $41000 at Cutter Motors in Santa Barbara, brand-new and built to YOUR spec in about 4 weeks, available for collection about 3-4 weeks later (these are averages). Avoid "over-age" dealer cars with a "I've-been-in-stock-for-about-a-year-and-taken-for-frequent-thrash-drives-at-the-hands-of-who-knows-and-salesmen" stigma !!!
: West coast only, please, although we'll work hard to cater to others further a-field.
: Such a fine car deserves to be special for a such a discerning driver. The short wait now will be over in no time, and certainly worth it.

I am not being paid for this followup (although I should be--how 'bout it, Michael?)but dealing with Michael is the right thing to do. The extra 1k for a Y2K car fresh out of the box is well worth it. Plus, Michael is an enthusiast, a BMW CCA member and the owner of a way cool white/orange-black M Coupe. He and the dealer stand by the cars including the niggly problems with the hatch lock and back wiper leak. When I wasn't happy with the tan/football pebble hide seats because they were not as represented, Michael went to bat with BMW NA and I had the choice of ordering another car or getting a significant discount (I took the discount and I play football with the seats).

When I have questions about performance mods, I call up Stu (a former Formula Atlantic racer) in service and he gives me great DYI advice about such things as whether I will blow myself up if I don't deactivate the explosive seat belt retracter while putting on the harness bar and comp belts.

Dealer support is all as you can tell from reading the Roundel. I contrast this experience with a trip with a friend to look at a used 540i at a dealer down south. The guy knew nothing about the car, got pissed off when I asked if he was a BMW CCA member and called me an idiot (not necessarily inaccurate but embarrassing when publicly noted )in front of the guy I brought with me to buy the car. No sale, pal.

So you So Cal folks, go see Cutter, go see Cutter, go see Cutter. OK, How 'bout an oil filter, Michael?
