Form follows function for BMW. An example: the e36M3's do not come standard with spoilers. Don't you think if they needed them, they would have come with them? Why? the rear diffuser of the car provides a more efficient counterforce to the lift at speed.
Two different companies. Two different philosophies. We all drive BMWs for different reasons, but the one big thing for me is: they don't scrimp on the engineering and on the impt. parts like drivetrain and chassis, there's no such thing as lowest cost-bidder. People poo-pah BMWphiles and say we pay too much. But I would pay too much than to pay for a plebian chassis with "nice" sheetmetal. See what happens when the image is stressed over the function?
