how I can determine which incoming wire is responsible for which actions? I expect with the speed-sensitive volume, the inputs won't be as simple as front-right, front-left, rear-right, rear-left and sub.

I'll take this subject directly to you after I dismantle the rear end. Unfortunately it'll be three weekends from now before I have any chance to do it.
