Thanks for the input, but...

I let the car cool down (sit for few hours) and then started her up: no more "click" sound. I let her warm up to full operating temperature and still no click at any rpm (idle to red-line).

A stuck lifter would manifest a higher frequency sound at higher rpm: that isn't happening. It certainly would be more noticeable with a cold engine.

A short in the plug wire would cause a misfire or rough idle: neither are happening.

I'm just about convinced this is something related to the main fan.

We'll see what happens after the next long drive.
