This issue has been around since the E36 M3's came out. It's a common occurance with these engines and is due to oil starvation, particularly when pushed hard. The generally accepted solution is to keep your oil level higher than the full mark on the dipstick. Some folks reccomend a full extra quart. I got my 99 M Coupe in March of last year and have found an extra half quart or a little more seems to do the trick. I did three driver's schools and several autocrosses last year and my engine remains quiet.
