The generally accepted solution is to keep your oil level higher than the full mark on the dipstick. Some folks reccomend a full extra quart. I got my 99 M Coupe in March of last year and have found an extra half quart or a little more seems to do the trick. I did three driver's schools and several autocrosses last year and my engine remains quiet.

I went ahead and added an extra quart yesterday. One thing I've found is that it's hard to read the dipstick when the car is warm: just a thin film over the gauge portion.

We'll see if this does the trick.
