If one looks at inflation, wages and gas price histories, including how long they had to work to earn the money to buy a gallon of gas, they'll see that gas costs about one-third less now than it did in the 1960s. Add this to the improved fuel economy of cars today, we end up with a "miles-per-hour of work" at least half of what it was 50 years ago. Who would have dreamed back then that they would work only half as much today to pay for fuel costs per mile driven?
I don't think we realistically (fairly?) can gripe about the cost of propelling our cars each mile down the road. It tends to take less and less time at our job as time goes by.
This thread reminds me of someone who gripes when he has to pay 10% more for something he uses regularly, but never complains when he gets a 5% pay raise.
