Dealer Says I Can't Wire Valentine 1 in Car! (archive)

The local dealership, who I trust, told me that I would not be able to wire in my Valentine 1 radar detector in my car without running a wire all the way to the battery in the trunk! I think this is rediculous, because all that you really have to do is tap off of a switched wire. I've done this four times in my other BMWs off of the sunroof motor or something similar. The dealer told me that tapping off of a wire would completely mess up the resistance in my electrical system causing serious problems down the road. I really don't want any electrical problems! Isn't their an unused connector somewhere on the car for an option that wasn't put into '99 M Coupes? Couldn't I tap off of that or something! Or couldn't I go directly to the fuse box in an empty slot? I do not know too much about electrical issues like this, but any help would be appreciated. I really would like to wire in the unit safely, but without causing any possible damage...
