The euro motor is stronger - both at low rpms and high rpms. I think the US spec engine is a bit stronger (couple lb-ft?) in the middle, *right* at it's torque peak.

Don't know where your numbers are from, but 0-60mph in 5.7s? Maybe shifting like my grandma! BMW says 0-60mph in 5.1s and 0-100kph in 5.4s for the euro spec cars. Those times are identical. BMW's stats say that it is to close to call which version is faster over the range of 0 to ~60mph. (There may be a real difference in time to distance, but we only have time to speed numbers to look at...)

After the US version car has to shift to third gear it's all over. The Euro spec car has a few percent longer final drive and a few hundred more engine rpms to work with.

I agree that with the new engine in the 2001 cars, doing a transplant of the euro motor would be frivolous.
