is the smoke white or blue? do you actually smell anything burning? if the 'smoke' is white and this only happens in the first 15-20 minutes of driving and/or when temperatures are low, it might just be the water condensed in the mufflers being evaporated (the steaming up of window points to that). that's probably nothing to worry about. if the smoke is white but happens even after the car is well warmed up, it's probably something else. a leaking head gasket that allows coolant into the intake and/or cylinder could potentially do that, which would definitely be a problem.

if you see any blue in the smoke, that's more serious - have it checked ASAP. older model BMW's used to trail blue smoke when you LIFT OFF while in gear, due to engine vaccuum sucking oil past valve guides. since your problem occurs under acceleration, it does not seem to be that.

hope this is helpful.

good luck!
