Personally, I like the fact that BMW's are rigid, solid and long lasting platforms, even if they weigh a bit more. I've owned MR2's, and other lightweight cars. An MR2 after 60,000 miles of hard driving gets a bit soft. At 100,000+ it's ready for the compactor, except the motor, which will be running like new when the car is fed to the crusher. The Miata is light and cheap, and guess what? It feels light and cheap! If I wanted a car to feel like a lightweight Jap car, I'd buy a lightweight jap car. What I want, is a solid, rigid German car. BMW's are well reputed to take abuse for miles and miles and miles... because they don't spare the metal to shave a few pounds, we get to enjoy a solid car for a long time. I don't race these cars for a living, I drive them to enjoy the experience and to enjoy the way they feel. Whether or not I could run a few seconds faster here or there, is not worth sacrificing the longevity of the cars feel.

: I REALLY REALLY want to see BMW start designing lighter cars.
