that unless you autocross regularly, you probably DON'T KNOW what your limits are. once you've found them on a road like ortega it's way too late. i doubt that anyone goes out there thinking "i'm going to get in over my head and wreck my car today, yeee-ha". they THINK they can, until reality proves otherwise (i'll be the first to admit having been overconfident more than once, and i've learned the hard way!).

the solution? - AUTOCROSS, AUTOCROSS, AUTOCROSS. push hard enough to slide and spin. once you can confidently detect understeer/oversteer BEFORE it happens AND CATCH IT, then you know your limits and can work on extending them. and in between, find a short, remote stretch of road (maybe just a couple of turns) and practice BY YOURSELF, with no passengers or other cars around to remove any urge to keep up or show off. start slow, work up to speed gradually...

just my opinion and experience - fwiw.
