Oil Issues -- Sorry for Bringing up an Old One (archive)

Ok, nearing 1200 miles (300 more to go . . .). I buy the idea that an oil change is warranted, to clean out any metal shards from run in. Any disagreement?

If not, what oil should I go to? The dealer rec (I guess I have to pay for this change, right?) 5W 40 synthetic? Any other choices? How about the 10W-60 M5 oil?

Suggestions/advice appreciated.
