Originally, it was my curiosity about what the car would sound like minus the cat, plus my B&B Tri-Flo's. It cost me $100 to find out. As expected, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. This did not scare me though, since my intent was to "fool" the computer the same way I had on my '99 R1100S, which uses basically the same Lambda sensor technology.
I decided to test the whole thing for a while, see how it ran, etc. Everything was dandy, including those glorious sounds! I took the car to a local Dynojet guy and put it through a couple runs. Sadly, I had no baseline for my car, but peak rear wheel HP was 220, TQ was 216. I don't think there was much loss, if any.
It was also confirmed through BMW sources that the post-cat O2 sensors DO NOT have anything to do with engine management. The sensors in the header do that. All these do is monitor cat functionality.
Now, that being said, the check light does come on. No one can confirm or deny that the pesence of the light affects performance. My experiences say it does not.
So why then have I put a cat (non BMW) back on? The "gain" was not worth the risk of getting pulled over and inspected out here in SoCal. My $.02: I've spent too much money *^(*ing around with this. Save your time & money and invest in a turbo or something :-)
