there's the 'give the people what they want' camp, who spends millions on research, clinics, whatever. that's the majority, and by very nature of the process it cannot innovate. the only thing these people truly design are questionnaires and their most important skill is number-crunching. GM is a shining example of this in the automotive world.

then there's the 'tell the people what to want' group. this approach requires vision and guts. sometimes it falls flat on its face, other times it changes the world. Lotus, Ferrari, BMW, and more recently Ford and Chrysler are in this camp. marketing for a company like this actually takes some talent and skill. creating a legend is much harder than creating a spreadsheet. something that people like jim will never understand.
