Cars always take a big hit in the first year, and the more expensive the car the bigger the hit. It's all in the psychology of the buyer.
Which would you rather have - brand new car for say $40,000 or the same car used for $37,000?
Most people in that situation pick the new one because most people who can afford $40 K can come up with the other 3K easily enough. Therefore the price on a used car has to drop quite a lot to be come more attractive than a new car. The only exceptions are cars like the new E46 which is so popular that there aren't enough new ones to go around... then people will pay for availability. The MCoupe doesn't have that kind of following, although I sure want one bad enough....

: I am thinking of buying an M Coupe in the next year but am a little surprised at its pretty severe looking depreciation curve. Very low mileage (< 10k miles) 1999s can be had for about $34k in private sales.

: I don't really understand this. I have never seen it get a bad magazine review, it is produced in low numbers, it is blindingly fast, has great handling, and appears to have decent reliability.

: Am I missing something? Perhaps its appearance has something to do with it?
