This M engine is known for the ticking noise when driven hard. The generally accpeted reccomendation is to add 1/2 to 1 full extra quart of oil. I usually run an extra 1/2 quart and just completed a two day driver's school this weekend and know clicking.
If you aren;t sure how to read the dipstick, check the manual as I believe it has a picture. An extra half quart puts it up to the little bump above the full line.
