Well, Dinan goes to 255/40 and 275/40 on their way expensive rims. The tires I saw on that car (a gutted ///M on it's way to club racing) were gForce R1A's, FWIW. I'll probably try that with the next set of track tires, but more on that later...

This is where I wound up, almost. Kumho's were unobtanium in any interesting sizes, so I ended up with the gFarces. Consensus seems to be that these are great tires for the two days that they last. ;)

Ahh, the Yokos... These things are Gawd's Own rain tire. For perspective, these grip better in the rain than a decent street tire (I was comparing against RE71's) do in the dry. But when it dries out, they're not a great compromise. Oh, and they're loud. Really loud. Did I mention that they're loud?

Would have been my first choice, but they aren't available until 8/1 according to Tire Rack. If you can wait, go with these, they stick well, come back from overheating quickly, and last a good long time.
: Anyone have any input? Do any of these tires allow me to run novice street-tire in SCCA Solo II (maybe the Yokahamas?). How about wear? Anything else I should be thinking about???
Depends on how they define "street tire". It's usually some low UTQG treadwear number, but I think it's at least 80 or 100, and none of these tires are close.
Toyo is forgotten again, though in this case they aren't there yet. My friend at Toyo tells me that they're working on 235/40 and 255/40 sizes, but that they aren't on the production schedule as of now. "This Fiscal Year" (meaning before 3/01) is the best I can get right now.
: BTW, I'm going to buy a set of rims for these tires, but nothing more than $200 each can buy. In this case, they only have to be strong, I'm not concerned over aesthetics (I'm going to have them powder coated black, to look cool on the Imola Red Coupe). Anyone know where I can find cheap, strong rims, besides the ATP's at Tire Rack ($179 ea.) Any problems with this approach?
The ATPs are HEAVY! I think they quoted me 28 and 31lbs for front and rear. My tires are coming on BBS RKs, 17x8 front, 17x10 (!) rear. I was surprised by the wide rears, but that was the BBS/BMW recommended fitment, at least says Tire Rack. I don't have the offsets in front of me right now, but I got the impression that most of the extra tire was stuffed under the car.
: Anyone have a set of ugly (scratched or tarnished) take-off stock rims they want to get rid of, at a reasonable price?
