It's possible that the mentioned "turbo M3" was running a very high boost system. The standard boost kit will be slightly more HP than a supercharger.

in order to get a bigger turbo (more boost) you need to reduce the compression in the engine. this makes for a larger disparity in full boost and low boost power....making the car much more undriveable.

It depends on the application. An auto-x might be the hardest place to drive a turbo. But i've seen many powerful turbo cars do well at these events.

Also, if it is more power you are looking for...a turbo is going to be a bit more powerful. there are people doing 12.0 second 1/4mile times on street tires w/ turbos. It's hard to find a supercharger setup that can get below 13.0

the only drawback on OBDII cars (your m coupe) is the cost.
