After 35 years of racing, I can tell you that there are points of view out there you couldn't IMAGINE holding - and sometimes they're not as crazy as they seem to us. I remember helping a competitor set his front end and discovering that he was running toe-IN on the same kind of car I ran with toe-OUT! I once used a long pair of Aeroquip hoses to an external oil cooler on a vintage vee without realizing that the added resistance was cutting my oil pressure because the pump couldn't handle the volume with the increased load. This was so obvious to a competitor that I felt like a 3 year old - I should have realized it. I once forgot a ground strap between the engine block and the frame on a car with electrically isolating engine mounts, so the spark was really weak and it ran like crap. It took me half a season to figure it out.
But the KILLER stupid act was when I couldn't get my Mini to run well at MidOhio (SVRA 1988). A spectator's wife looked at my engine and the obviously upset look on my face and said, "Gee- the wires on my husband's car don't look like that - these two don't make a "X" on his". I'd crossed plug wires 2 and 3 at the distributor without realizing it!
This board has a pretty neat bunch of people on it. I'm hapy to participate - and I hope I add something. I appreciate all the effort that goes into the posts - let's stay cool and we'll all learn from each other.
