In 1987, I was invited to co-drive a friend's car in an SVRA enduro at Road Atlanta. They cancelled the enduro for some reason, but my friend insisted that I come anyway (I had the plane tickets) and he brought a car for me (a Sunbeam Harrington LeMans protoptype, for those of you with really big memory banks) since I didn't have the time to tow mine and he had a two-car trailer. I was smokin' down the chute, then downshifted to third, only to find that the engine lost major power - but when I hit second, it was back again. I finished the session and told him about it, getting ready to dive into the carbs and ignition.
He took me aside and told me not to worry about it - instead, he asked if the shift gate felt OK. I had to admit that it felt a little too wide, but I figured I wasn't familiar enough with a Harrington LeMans. Turns out he put a Warner T-5 or something similar in it from a Camaro! I wasn't IN 3rd, I was in 5TH!
