The speeds are low and the tires aren't close to the limits of their adhesion. It's more of a problem at high road speeds or on the track.

You're right on, though - I remember trying to figure out why my girlfriend and the crowd looked so horrified during my Solo II runs in my Mini back in 1967. Turns out I was on 3 wheels for much of the course! This isn't usually the fastest way around, but it doesn't seem to hurt times much, either in many cars.
