I agree, if you're going for good sound at minimal cost, replace the amps and speakers, not the head unit. Most people can't hear the difference b/t the stock head unit and an aftermarket one. It's asthetics and features that should drive a change in the headunit IMHO.

BMW headunits deliver 4 - 5 volt outputs (I don't remember exactly, look in the archives or at MZ3.net) to the stock amp. So if you get a high end amp that accepts 4+ volt inputs, you don't need a line leveler from the stock headunit. Most low and mid range amps only accept 1 to 2 volt inputs which is why they need line levelers. PPI makes amps that accept 5.5 volt. There are a whole bunch of other high end amps that do the same. I would save the money that would be spent on a good line leveler and buy a better amp instead. BTW, in some cases, you could also use the speaker level inputs from some amps.
