I top it off after the pump shuts off & that means an extra 0.4 gal or so & also that the gage will go squirrely at the start of the tank, but even so, it tends to read pretty consistently once it's run thru about 50 miles or so.
I get between 150-180 miles on the first half of the tank, then about 100 on the second half if I drive it deep into the reserve.
I drove 20 miles home with the light on last week & it only took 12.5 gal so go figure.
I just keep track of how much I have driven on the tank (that's what the trip meter is for ;-) and fill up accordingly & have never felt the need to have the gague re-calibrated or try the fuse pulling trick. when the tank is full it I think that the sender float is beyond it's operating range or something as the gauge tends to react to accel/decel when it goes from full to empty. it's mildly annoying but nothing to really worry about. sort of like that annoying flickering yellow light in the middle of the cluster ;-)
I like Rick have also wondered how far it will go on a single tank. farthest I have done on a tank is 304 miles but it only needed 12.07 gal on fill-up, so at 25mpg I could have likely gone close to 330 miles on the tank.
I'm averaging 22.7mpg overall for the 19k miles I've had the car.
