that I am aware of (My 98 M roadster was the same way as you describe your 2000 to be- I doubt they changed for one model year).

What you need to do to get the wiper arms off the windshield without opening the bonnet (hood) is to turn the car on so the wiper motor will engage then turn off the car when the wipers are half way thru the cycle. Not a great design but that is the way it works.
