Nothing more than the truth and a story about how my wife and I purchased our 99' M Coupe. I took a plane flight out of Raleigh, NC to go to Midway Airport in Chicago. Then paid a cab fare to go to the Amtrak Station. Took a train to Milwaukee, WI finally to be greeted by my new friend David Jubelirer and previous M Coupe owner. Finally proceeded to drive our new M Coupe 14 hours home to Raleigh.

A little background first. I've posted about a few weeks past on this forum. I'm a previous 92' VW Corrado owner w/ a good size following. We won the largest VW show in the USA/East Coast for modified Corrado and had the pleasure of having two magazine articles in VW Trends/Performance VW Magazine. I belonged to a club and traveled to shows, frequented the CCA- Corrado Club of America where my car can be seen in the gallery under Archives By Date.

I'm very passionate about cars. I learned the hard way how to modify a car, losing tons of money to make it just right. Three suspensions/two body kits/three exhausts/four sets of wheels later I had my car. I will in truth tell you I wanted to aim at a M3. Funds were not available to buy one new... so I made one to the best of my ability w/ cams/engine work/brake work/etc. And still I longed for a RWD M3! Until... the M Coupe appeared at a local dealership here in Raleigh.

I proceeded to print articles off of this forum, listen to previous owners, call potential advertiser's and finally gain a friendship. One thing I did learn off this board. There are many passionate people that love their car or this car. I am now one of you! :) With pleasure!

What a way to learn about a car. Days of reading and a 14 hour trip w/ a little one on one. Thru the Midwest and down into the mountains of the Virginia's into the beautiful state of NC. Twisted roads, rainy periods, sunny periods, night time driving (incredible red instrumentation) and CD's of selected music to create my incredible and memorable trip.

I can remember David and his mother the insane response the car draws. Heads turning or will turn, thumbs up, smiles or any other attention will come my way... and it did!!! I also learned the car is very well thought of stock. Attention to detail is so thorough. A few items I had to get for my corrado that are stock: dead pedal/short shift kit/performance brakes/very well designed exhaust/floor mats/battery located in trunk. The M insignia draws so much attention just by itself, whether it be an E30, which I still love and David was borrowing the night of the transaction to the M3 or M5. The lighted shift knob and the M insignia on the rear wheels... very sharp!

The M Coupe reminds me of the corrado. Not a huge seller or audience, funky lines, incredible handling and a rare car! I just read this M Coupe may be discontinued. I'm perfectly content if it happens because it will be that much more distinctive. You either love this car or hate it. Of course the readers on this board love the car for the most part unless they are visitors from other makes of cars. The handling is overwhelming stock.

I remember reading someone's post... learn to drive the car stock first. I thought why? I found out. This car is so well balanced and quick. Having spent enormous dollars to make a corrado into another car was fun but was it really that much more of a car? No. A simple suspension and P Flow w/ a chip would have been enough. If you really want to take the car to the next level it has to be forced air. Do you really want to change the set up and design? No. Not me. I remember talking to a former owner, who buys cars for a living. He has owned Porsche/Mopar/BMW/etc. He told me never to buy a forced air modified car. The compression ratio's are usually off. Chances are the car was not built correctly and you will find yourself in a tough situation. For once it set me straight, I learned my lesson. Nothing against Dinan or other aftermarket tuner's, but I find this car good enough stock. A supercharger might drop the 0-60 times under the 5 second barrier and cost an extra $15K plus- but who is going to tune the car? And at what price? I'll leave it for the few and the brave. I love this car stock.

David did do a few mods for me. He had the radar detector professionally hooked up to turn on/off w/ the car. Also purchased the arm rest and clear lens on the front bumper... worth the arrangements. A possible Xenon lighting transformation could be a future purchase too. Finally the magnetic covers for the rear fenders in Silver.

I hope to continue to read posts on this board and add opinion.

Thanks for listening!
Regards,
Scott Zonca
