I don't know why Mark finished where he did, perhaps he'll want to say something.
But I can say that why Jeff Reitmeir and I finished where we did in the M Coupe ... despite triple-adjustable JRZ shocks, the car handles pretty much like my bone-stock one does at the limit: poorly. Just way too many uncontrolled body motions. It is possible that with enough experimentation we could do better (we were starting with zero experience) but I just think the car is just way too hard to drive at the limit with quick transitions. Maybe it's an okay track car, but it's just not a good autocrosser.
Jeff pulled off a miracle run on his last run to claw his way up to 21st. I finished 36th. Between us we have 7 national championships out of maybe 20 attempts. I think we have now proven for certain that this car is uncompetitive in SS.
In fact, although I've had my car for about 2 years now and I very much love it as a street car, I think it's just a terrible autocrosser, at least in stock trim.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge M Coupe fan and my car isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, Jeff may even buy the one we drove in Topeka! But it is doomed to be an uncompetitive autocross car.
I guess, Mike, that you will be hearing about the superiority of the S2000 at least on an autocross course. Gary Thomason is amazing. Remember that he owned an M Coupe himself. He tests cars for a living.

I really am curious why Mark ended up so low in placement? I am sure there must have been something wrong with the car, or maybe a hit pylon? At least he was the fastest BMW in class, but now I will hear about the superiourness of the S2000 in the months to come from some of my buddies.
