Audi S3 is based on Audi A3, which is entry level Audi, whose chasis was used for creation of Golf A4 (or Mk4 in Europe - 4th generation VW Golf). That same chasis was later used for the new Beattle, Audi TT, Seat (something, can't remember the name) and Skoda Octavia (or was it Felicia).

Either way, these two cars (S3 and M Coupe) are far from being competitors. Closest competition to S3 is its own brother Golf IV GTI VR6 4-motion, which is basicaly 2.8L narrow V6 with DOHC producing 205hp, 6-speed, all wheel drive (drive train simmiliar to Rally Golf sold in Canada). Audi S3 uses identical 1.8T motor found in hi-powered version of TT quatro (225 hp, quattro, 6 speed as well)

S3 is fairly pricey considering it is a 4 seater hatchback derived from econobox, I beleive in Germany it runs slightly more than US$30,000. Non the less it is one fun car, but nothing like the BMW M coupe. In some way it is better, the price and utility is way supperior to the BMW but in fun factor it falls too short.
