Normally that nasty noise on start-up is a hydraulic lifter. Whan you park the car sometimes the oil drains out of the lifter. Then when you restart the car, that lifter isn' working until the oil pressure comes up and refills the lifter making it work correctly. Some individual cars are more inclined to do that than others. I had a 1992 Miata that started doing it and the Miata club suggested that I switch to synthetic oil as a possible solution. I switched to Castrol Syntec 5W-50W and it went away never to return. It seems now that BMW has moved to Castrol and Syntec for the Z3.
