I'm now starting the second winter in northern Colorado with a '99 Z3 coupe. The original Michelin 225/50 ZR16 MXM Pilots will soon be replaced with Michelin 225/55-HR16 MXM4 Pilots which are better on snow-covered roads (and probably an excellent dry-road tire, too). Our '00 Volvo S80 has these tires and we went over a couple of snow-packed passes a week ago; great handling and much more sure-footed than the standard MXMs.

But then any decent snow tire should be great on snow packed roads. Where I live, the snow pack doesn't last long (Blizaks or Michelin Alpine Pilots) and there's more wet roads around than snowy ones.

As far as the coupe handling in the snow, remember that traction is a must; without it, you'll slide about. But that's true with any car. Its not the Z3 coupe that's poor on snow-packed roads; its the tires. With decent snow or all-season tires, the Z3 coupe can do well enough in the snow. One has to remember to drive cautiously and never get aggressive on snowy roads; you'll end up in trouble.

Drive smart,

Bart
