I lived in Boston for several years with my 72 beetle w/o snows. In my opinion, if you're good driving in the snow and you put snows on, you should be fine. A bad snowstorm came in when at work and I had a 50 mile drive back through snow, slush, you name it. I was on the stock tires. I've owned lots of cars, and driven them all in snow conditions (I grew up in NH).

The 50/50 weight distribution and traction control made it very predictable in the snow. The ABS worked extremely well. The only real problem was pulling out into traffic from a stop on packed snow. If you get a spare set of 16" rims with narrower track Blizzaks, you should be pretty happy with the performance.
