I worked at a BMW/Toyota dealer (in Parts) back in 1978-1982. Back then, it was all on microfische. And though the Toyota one was easy as hell, the BMW stuff was a maze of HORRORS! None of it was in English, part numbers did not always make sense (as in grouping), and many many times the diagram numbers did not match the desriptions and parts you ordered (which you had to decipher German anyway).

Say for instance, Toyota part numbers were a XXXXX-XXXXX and if need be a color code at the end -XX. The first 5 numbers were for the grouping, and the second five numbers were for what vehicle. So a 1 series was an engine group as in 15601 and was an oil filter, and the -35010 would mean it was for a 20-22R engine as in a celica or truck. A 2 series was fuel group (23300 was a fuel filter), etc . . . . But with the BMW part numbers, they'd even mix window parts in with the engine parts, and things ended up all over the place. I sure hope that is fixed by now???
