My dealer was able to replace the sender/fuel pump in my `99 M Coupe without cutting the carpet. My car had the same maladies that you described.

The onzly downside of my experience was the technician dented my rocker panel in the process. It has since been fixed.

I explicitly asked my service advisor if they were going to cut a ahole in the carpet. If so, I did not want the work done. I had the service advisor write in the job ticket not to cut a hole in the carpet.

The guage works fine now. There other problems with the dealer's work that we spoke about last week though.

Good luck.

After a complete fillup, my gas gauge is moving from one extreme to the other. This is the first time I have seen it, but only my 3rd time filling up the car, a '99 with me for 2 weeks.

I have searched the archives, but there are WAY too many posts on this. What is the verdict on repair. Being a '99, the carpet is not velcroed on like the '00 Coupe.
