There's a sticker in our Z3 coupe's engine compartment to use only BMW synthetic high-performance oil, part no. xxxxxxxxxx. Synthetic oils tend to be more forgiving at the extremes of temperature and durability.

Valvoline, Mobil and Castrol all make great synthetic oils; each has their devoted users. I'm using Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 because I sometimes drive on mountain roads where the engine works a bit harder than on flat roads. And I change oil & filter every 5k miles.

The local BMW shop folks says 5W-30 would be fine if one stayed off mountain roads and never accelerated hard. When our coupe goes in for the 15K checks, the shop said they'll use Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 for the oil change. If I was using Mobil 1 or Castrol Synteck, they'd get some of that. I asked what if I used some other synthetic oil besides one of these or BMW oil; the guy just frowned.......
