i agree with you. on paper, it's a heavy car. and in print, in every single review i have read, the in between the lines has talked about the "more substantial mass".

but, the people who buy that car don't really care. and coupe owners don't care, either, i'll bet, since we're getting the same engine, and staying at our ~3050lb. weight.

if you're going to take issue with weight, also talk about the M5's girth, the z8's portliness, or how much regular 330i's weight now, too (only about 100lb less than an M3, with 100 less hp).

people say it's because of the bigger chassis and it's safer. whatever. to use similes, bmw is like ping. a priori, it seems like a high performance widget, but when you look at what pros are using, cars or golf, it's porsche or mizuno or titleist forged. in other words, things that are usually not accessible to everyday people. however, we bmw owners like comparing our cars to inaccessible cars and high end cars because it a) makes those cars look bad in value/performance equation, b) it also makes us feel better.
