SPEED SECRETS - Professional Race Driving Techniques, by ROSS BENTLEY:
This was a very easy to read book with lots of driving tips. The author listed thirty-four speed secrets. There were more.
The author really developed and discussed keeping the car balanced. As it turns out most speed secret tips related to keeping the car balanced. I especially linked the information on tail breaking and the line to take around the track. There was good information about heel and toe shifting, something I'm still having problems with. There were also lots of tips about how to practice race techniques while driving safely on the street.
Sample: "Entering the corner, break at the traction limit - threshold breaking. As you reach the point where you begin turning into the corner, start easing of the breaks as you turn the steering wheel. The more you turn the wheel, the more you ease off the breaks (trail breaking), until you completely off the breaks. At this point your vehicle should be at the tires' maximum cornering traction limit. As you start to unwind the steering coming out of the corner, you begin increasing the acceleration until you are at full throttle onto the straight" Page 59.
The book is only 160 pages long and costs $15.95. If your interested in a good read about learning how to race I recommend you read this book.
INNER SPEED SECRETS - Race Driving Skills Techniques and Strategies, by ROSS BENTLEY & RONN LANGFORD:
This is also a very easy to read book with lots of driving tips. The author listed thirty-eight speed secrets. Again, there were more. This book deals primarily with improving the driver.
According to the author to drive fast you must drive at the subconscious level. Things simply happen to fast to drive at the conscious level in a racecar. The book is dedicated to teaching the reader how to develop a positive mental race image and how to train the mind to drive at the subconscious level. The book has many quotes from famous racers to illustrate the points under discussion.
I liked the many tips that allows the reader to practice racing anywhere that will improve and program their mind for the track. Setting at work you can stop and mentally take a left hand sweeping turn and this mental image about the turn will program the mind to take a left hand sweeping turn. It seems that you can practice driving without even being in the car!
Sample: "All you need is a clear mental picture of what you want to accomplish, and then to be aware of all the physical sensations while trying it. Amazingly, your body will automatically figure out the best way to accomplishing the activity. Your brain will compare what you are doing with the mental image of what you want to be doing, and unconsciously make the necessary corrections." Page 102.
The book is also only 160 pages long and costs $15.95. If your interested in a good read about the mental side of racing I recommend you read this book.
For you autocross drivers you might like to read "SECRETS OF SOLO RACING" By HENRY A. WATTS. This is a book dedicated to autocross. This book was on my reading list last year and is well worth reading. It is 172 pages long and cost $14.95.
