what we're discussing here is a. the new porsche GT and b. whether or not BMW gets it in terms of making a sports car versus powered up luxo car. both ridiculous points, but those were the two talking points.

well, i haven't driven many supercars (whether elise s190 is one or not is a matter of argument), but i've had the privilege of riding in an f40 and an f50 on the track, and my most memorable impression is of the power at 100+. neither car feels that much faster than the m coupe down low (i was able to hang with them except on the straights back when i had mine), but at 130 both cars will pin you in the seat like the m coupe does off the line. so much for 0-60? matter of preference. the new 'porky' m3 and the new m coupe should not be that much faster off the line than the old generation cars, but the extra ponies at high rpm ought to let them better keep up with exotica at triple-digit speeds. on the track i've had trouble keeping up with a well-driven m5 in my lotus (and one m coupe owner on this board was giving me a hell of a chase at SIR, home track advantage or not ;) so i expect the new m3 and m coupe to be as formidable or more so. porsches? - pass 'm all the time, turbos, slicks and all. granted, a well driven one is fast - but i've seen precious few. i HAVE seen several leave the track backwards a couple dozen feet in front of me.

bottom line - the new bimmers are plenty fast, all gadgets and pounds included. and whatever theoretical advantage a 'purer' porsche might have, the average porsche (or bmw) driver can't use. IMHO, of course.
