But at least you have a response! If I recall correctly, the shift gates on older Ferraris were functional in that they protected the transmission in some way. Perhaps they just forced the driver to slow the shift enough that the synchros had more time to work their magic.

A Ferrari owner I knew years ago said the gates were a pain in the butt.
