I want to replace the stock sub with some better stuff, but i don't know jack about car audio. can someone give me a hand?

Not sure how far you wanted to go but I just got through replacing the head unit, amp, rear speakers and sub in my '01 Z3 coupe. For the sub in particular, I replaced the 6.5" woofer with one I ordered from www.partsexpress.com. The main reason for upgrading the woofer is that the stock one began to distort at higher volumes. The biggest hurdle was that the stock enclosure and vent port is acoustically designed for the stock woofer and so I had to find one that would work well in the stock enclosure (which is definitely on the small side). I also stuffed poly-fill into the entire enclosure (which increases the effective interior enclosure volume by around 10% or so) and also had to do a small wiring change since the new woofer was single voice coil rather than the stock dual voice coil.
