1) Is the M Coupe worth it over the 3.0 Z3 Coupe?
Absolutely - the two engines are night and day, and then there are all the other differences, such as suspension setup, looks, interior, etc. Of course, if you aren't partial to stiff rides and booming exhausts, forget the M Coupe.
2) How does it compare to an M3?
The M3 is a longer wheelbase car with the same engine. The M3, especially after 20k miles of breakin, is an extremely easy car to drive day in and out. The cabin is relatively quiet, the shifting is precise, smooth, throttle response is perfect. Highway cruising is stable - Car is extremely nimble for its size.
The M Coupe on the other hand is a pocket rocket. With the shorter wheelbase it'll kick out its rear with less provocation. At least when new (I only have 8k miles) the shifting is notchier (albeit shorter) and the throttle response is a tad touchy (adding the JC chip went a long way to smoothing out the throttle response, particularly off the line). Car is just a cockpit, suitable for two and small luggage. If you're claustrophobic, forget it. Interior is comfortable but it reminds you that you're in a pure sports car - no storage space, no digital clocks, etc.. The ride is stiffer over bad roads than the M3 and highway driving seems to be a tad more frantic. I would take the M3 anyday over the M Coupe for a long road trip but on the back roads, the M Coupe has the edge on handling. Also, the M Coupe feels more stable at speeds over 90.
3) Just wondering, do yall get a lot of stares?
What do you think? ;) You can't stop at a gas station without talking to someone...And cops *will* notice you. The M3 can slip by, particularly in a non-offensive color like silver.
4) Hows it for trunk space? Although that really isnt too much of a concern
Forget trunk space. The Coupe is obviously tighter than the M3. Two or three duffle bags and you're already blocking your rear-view. Buy it for the wild looks and handling.
5) Im assuming all model years are pretty much similar, am I correct? What kind of pricing should I look for?
'00 coupes may have some extra chrome interior tidbits that '99s didn't have, but all can be ordered for a couple dollars if need be. The 2000 models also came with chrome headlight trims and chrome kidney grills. The door sills on older coupes may read differently too - in 2000 they switched to just showing the M logo, while older ones said M Coupe. Also, 2000 models should've come with the autodimming rear mirror with clown nose. An M Coupe with a few thousand miles sitting on a dealers lot is an easy pick for a bargain in certain parts of the country - they could barely move new ones and used ones are near impossible. Should be able to get one with less than 5k miles for less than $34k.
6) (last one) I havent been on here very long and I plan on searching the archives some more (*as helpful as they are*) and I was wondering if I should hold out for a little while for the new one. The problem is the deal with my M3 is for a limited time so I might have to use my interim Mazda
Thanks in advance, I might still have some more questions though.. sorry
If you can wait for the new one, do it. There's no such thing as too much power! Hopefully they tuned the suspension a bit to handle the extra power as even with 240 horses you can break the rear on a sunny dry day.
