New Years morning high speed hijinks (archive)

For the record, if you want to speed on the freeway, the morning of New Years Day is a great day to do it... heres the story of the run-in with The Man this morning. I live in Seattle and went up to Bellingham for New Years Eve, however I had to work at 10 this morning. So I got up off my buddies couch at 8am and hopped in the ///M. Stopped by the gas station, filled up, and got some coffee to relieve my semi hung over grogginess. I then got on the freeway and found that I seemed to be one of the only people on the road! So I turned on my radar detector and got on it. I was able to cruise around 120 mph for the first 40 miles or so, with some bursts up to 144 indicated. Interestingly, I just rolled past 3000 miles, and the speed governor seems to have raised from 137 to about 144. Anyone else noticed the variable speed governor? Anyways, I was quite pleased with myself for dodging two speed traps quite masterfully, and slowed down to pass an overpass, since the state patrol frequently sit on the to swoop in behind the unsuspecting speeder... sure enough, there was an unmarked looking stater roaring down the on ramp as I passed. I going a relatively leisurely 85 or 90 at the time, and slowed down even more when I saw he was coming after me. Sure enough, he pulled right up behind me and flipped the lights on. I pulled over, and he walks up to the car. "Happy new year", I say. Doing his best to act pissed off/dour he says "happy new year" back. "I assume you know why I pulled you over" he says. "Umm, no, why dont you tell me?". "You passed a trooper 3 miles back at 100+ mph. We can impound your car and take you to jail for reckless driving for that." I was visibly unimpressed by that. He goes back to his car with my license/registration. And a state patrol suv pulls in behind him. An older trooper gets out, and they start talking. The older trooper says "Yeah, thats him, I KNOW thats him". He then comes over and chastises me about the usual stuff. The other trooper comes back and gives me a ticket for 80+ in a 70! It turns out that the only evidence they had that I was speeding was the trooper in the SUV was GOING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION on the freeway, and saw I was going fast, and radioed to the trooper that pulled me over. So anyways, I am going to get the notes on this $60 ticket, which will demonstrate that they had absolutely no radar/pace data at all. I will then take it to court and get it tossed. =) Anyways, happy new years everyone!
