I was sorry to here of the accident and your ordeal, but your message ended with the wrong conclusion. "The child seat saved the baby's life" should have been: "those two reckless idiots killed that baby's father"

A reminder to us all who drive and enjoy fast cars - our moments of selfishness and stupidity can create dire consequences for those who wanted nothing more than to get to the grocery store safely with their family.

Makes me wake up.

My good friend who is the chief instructor for the track events I run sent me this tough reminder:

"This is still getting to me...........just wanted to share what happened.

About 10pm New Year's Day I was on the way home from watching a movie with
(friend name) in SF when an accident happened on the freeway just seconds in front
of me. Two cars had been racing/battling each other at high speed, and had
caused a Ford Explorer to lose control, flipping and crashing heavily in the
fast lane. I came upon it lieing upside down in the fast lane in front of
me, debris scattered all over the road. The people that caused it were gone.

I stopped my car with flashers on to block the lane so no one would hit their
car, and aimed my headlights at the Explorer so as to help pull survivors.
No one seemed to know what to do, so I kind of took charge. We pulled a 35 or
so year old woman out, then her 1 1/2 year old baby boy, both alive. The
woman could walk but was bleeding rather heavily from a leg wound, and the
baby was saved by his car seat and had only slight bleeding at the mouth. I
managed to get the two of them behind the protection of my car.......the
woman was understandably pretty hysterical.

Talked with 911 dispatch to brief them, then proceeded to try and figure out
what we could do for her husband, who was trapped upside down in the vehicle
and in a pretty bad spot.

Unfortunately the only life sign I could get was a weak pulse -- his head and
upper body were crushed by the collapse of the roof and windshield. In a
matter of moments even the pulse was gone.

There wasn't much we could do. I helped comfort the mother and child as much
as I could before the ambulance got there, briefed police/ambulance on 911

I didn't notice all the blood on my hands until after I got home.

What a terrible tragedy. All because of a couple if irresponsible idiots.

I felt so helpless, unable to really do anything to keep that man from dieing.

If you know anyone who needs a little reminder of the importance of putting
baby seats in correctly, tell them. The baby seat definitely saved this
childs life."
