The original tires were MXM 225/50-ZR16s. Not marked for rotation direction. But some Pilots are directionally marked.

And regarding:

"The reason for the directionality as I understand it is that the tread is made to pump water outwards when rotating the correct way. If you put it on backwards it would suck water inwards instead which wouldnt be good for traction..."

I agree; Michelin Pilot Sports are V grooved and do this.
