I have to admit that it has been bothering me a little that so many M Coupe owners (on this board) are complaining about their M Coupe's. I am, and have been, very excited about purchasing the 2001 M Coupe. The arrival of the new engine was big news for me.

It seems strange to me that so many new M Coupe('99-'00) owners on this board are complaing about lack of features and developments on a car they weren't planning to buy.

Is it that the new engine is salt in the wound but not enough to justify switching ships?? Or are the critiquers really not that happy with their cars?

I looked at the following cars;

Boxter S--Not a big fan of the boxter styling. I know it is a great car but it didn't do it for me. Plus I really don't like convertibles with the top up and I live in Chicago.

911--Too much money for what you get and what I want.

Z06--Great performance car at a bargain price, it out performs the Modena and 911 in many catagories. However, I just don't like the way it looks.

S2000--This car demonstrates why I like the new M Coupe engine. 1st it shines because of the high RPM limit(as will the new M Coupe). But it lacks torque down low which dramaticly changes the nature of the car. Part VW Golf Part Porsche. The new engine for the M Coupe has great torque (like the old) and adds the thrill of a high RPM limit. Because of the high torque the car does not need a 6 speed, for performance alone. Also, I disagree wholeheartedly that the increased red line is only a benefit at high speeds. It is a benefit in every gear, including 1st and 2nd. I have an '88 911 and it would just love to keep climbing in 2nd, but the price of a new engine discourages me.

M Coupe--Great performance, unique style (which both my wife and I love), utility (I like the hatch back) and a reasonable price compared to its true competitors. (Lexus, Mercedes, Z06, Porsche 911 Boxter S)

Will it pain me if in 2 years a better M Coupe comes out, yeah but hopefully I'll be enjoying driving my car too much to worry about it.
