Heater taking a long ttime to get hot... (archive)

Is it common to have the thermoatat take a long time to change from cold to hot and vice versa? We had the heat on HOT (turned to the right), put it in the middle and it was still putting out very hot air. I had to put it 80% to the left (cold) before it started to cool off. Is this just something we live with, or am I the only one? Thanks.
